The Guardian, also known as the Pink Drifter, is a major recurring NPC in Hyper Calorie-free Out-of-stater. They are the first friendly NPC that the Drifter meets during the game.

Every bit with a bulk of the characters in Hyper Light Drifter, the Guardian is given neither a canon proper name nor gender in the game itself. Both "the Guardian" and "the Pink Drifter" are fan-given names that the developers have themselves adopted when referring to the character, equally the developers otherwise tend to avoid pushing for canon names.^{^[1]} The developers have also referred to the character using the singular they pronoun.^{^[2]}

The Guardian is get-go seen in a short cutscene after the tutorial stage, where they are caring for the unconscious Out-of-stater about a campfire. They will proceed to bring Drifter back to their habitation in cardinal town.

Subsequently in the game, The Guardian can be found at each of the 4 primary stages. When talked to, they will provide the Out-of-stater with helpful information on the locations of the Modules, also equally additional data on the 1st and 4th conversations.

During the first chat, The Guardian will mention an object reminiscent of the glowing white diamond The Drifter was shown to reach for intro cutscene. This object is hinted to be, or related to, the Immortal Jail cell.

During their fourth dimension in central, they saved many people and travelers from the creatures in the surrounding wilderness. The Merchant in the city tells the story of how they were saved by The Guardian, forth with their companion.

The Drifter is rescued by The Guardian in the commencement of the game, and is free to render to their flat at any bespeak in the game.
